and most people who were not giving me words of consolation/answering out of obligation rather honestly told me that DP this year did not live up to past years' [which is unsurprising given the number of problems that arose during the course of this time but never mind];
among which some comments were that the script was boring/hard to understand, most people i asked either had no impression or did not think highly of sets this year, the acting was bland, the only part they looked forward to was the dance, blah blah. never mind what their comment but what i can/could see clearly is that the actors/crew/sets put in lots of hard work and effort into all this, so really they deserve respect regardless. what made me happy was that apparently 9/10 people all said they liked/ think of weijie's dance as the best [yay].
as a stand alone DP this year, in a foreign ground, given all the difficulties and negative energy it was rather lucky that we managed to pull through- not comparing with past experiences/past DPs.
to me, that is already a great consolation; that is already good enough-
but somehow? for some people they just have to compare-
in the first place, comparing yourself with previous years/predecessors is really uncalled for, giving that previous years had different situations, different settings, different confinements. sets, for example, was allowed scaffolding, which is one of the most fantastic and awesome things/experiences i've had in my life. from 3 storeys [when i was year 1] to 2 storeys, then to a ban totally when joon kit took over as the sets head. that marked the end of scaffolding in sets, which is a huge pity, i think. simply given that the element of scaffolding is absent from sets for the past two years makes is markedly different from past years, which may not be a bad thing. [i'm not making a value judgement or saying which is better; im just saying that it's different.]
to say that something is the best in the history of it's existence is the most egoistic, ignorant, conceited, arrogant, pompous statement i could think of ever. effectively you are putting down years and legions of well-respected [and for a good reason] experience/lessons learnt/seniors well before you, and just saying big-headedly that you're the best.
honestly speaking, not to condemn people or what;
to say things to boost your morale [and your team's] is one thing,
but to say things in a subjective way that might even offend your predecessors,
and to say things to inflate your ego,
that's really pushing it.
the only reason why i refrain from rebutting directly is out of politeness/courtesy.
otherwise for the sake of all the predecessors and seniors who have come before us,
i would have used a dozen reasons and slammed those big-headed words.
sometimes,
before you say something,
you need to think of the consequences.
and whether you can/do live up to it.
because if you don't,
you're just digging your own grave.
